Venotonic Drugs
Kim Hyoung-Tae

Abstract
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is common health problem but frequently neglected by the physicians. In addition to the well known mechanism of CVI, reflux and obstruction, recent studies show inflammatory interaction between leukocytes and endothelium plays important role in symptoms and signs of the CVI. Surgical or endovenous treatments are well established option for the superficial insufficiency. But no treatment modality achieved recognition for the deep vein insufficiency. Elastic stocking stands a mainstay of the management of the deep vein insufficiency but compliance matters. Recent meta analyses show value of venotonics. This article covers pathophysiology of CVI and action mechanisms and clinical data of venotonic drugs.
